KY3: Well one of our co-workers at KY3 graciously let us come out to their property to see their pitiful garden bed. Like, what did they do wrong here?

Mike/OOS: Where do I start? No, I don't want to disparage anyone. So it looks like these are pickets that were used for fencing and they're a thinner material. They’re also infused with chemicals to keep them lasting longer. Some of those chemicals, if you're putting in a vegetable garden, you don't necessarily want to plant any veggies in it and then eat the veggies. I understand these are only two years old, so with cedar it lasts a lot longer and it will not have any chemicals in the cedar itself so this is the wrong materials bottom line. 

KY3: And you have the solution. 

Mike/OOS: Yes, absolutely. So we sell raised cedar boxes. We make varying sizes from octagons, believe it or not—we’ve had that, or foot wide by 60 feet long boxes. If you have a space, we can build a box to fit that space.

KY3: That’s so cool. And they're like bright cherry red, aren’t they? 

Mike/OOS: Yes, so when the cedar is cut from the tree, it’s cherry red and white. It’s beautiful. One thing that happens when it's exposed to the sun is it deteriorates and degrades from that color and starts to turn this gray color. Now, one tip you can do is to get some linseed oil from your local big box store or hardware store and soak it into the wood. It'll soak all that in and that'll create a barrier for the UV light to not deteriorate the color of the cherry red cedar. And that'll keep your materials lasting longer so they don't start looking like this after two years.
